My story as of late

I realize that it's been a couple of years since my last post. I think the success that I've had with weight loss should be shared with others - I get so many questions that I can't answer all of them individually. I wish I could.

My priorities have shifted

About a year ago I began noticing that my son, who was previously ahead with his speech and development, began losing words. Within just a few months he had lost almost all the words he had previously learned. Where he once loved other children, he began having crying fits every time I'd take him in public. Soon after, I noticed he had a hard time looking me in the eye. I had him tested for autism. We found out our sweet, barely two-year-old son had a rarer form of autism called regressive autism. Nobody knows how it happens or why the regression starts or even where it ends. It was a very difficult time for us, but we came to realize that our sweet little boy, Lincoln, was still our son, disability or not, and he was in there.

A gift to the world

With a lot of therapy, Lincoln has since regained much of the speech he lost, but it comes and goes. He will be  3-years-old at the end of October and he is just barely beginning to put two words together again, though sparsely. He is doing so well at saying yes or no and pointing again as well (HUGE milestones for autistic children). He is also doing much better socially. He has friends that he asks to see on occasion. I believe that one day he will speak conversationally, but it might be awhile. In the meantime we have noticed our son has many gifts. He is able to hike for miles! We took him to Grand Teton over the last weekend and he was able to hike and most difficult of hikes and keep up (and often lead). He has the ability to put together puzzles that no other two-year-old would be able to put together. He has a penchant for technology and is very good at it. He knows his colors and letters, and I believe he can read a few words as well. He knows how to manipulate his mother like no other ;) There's a very, very bright young man behind his silence. I hope that one day it can be revealed to the world, as it has been to me.

Losing... and gaining... and losing again

When I originally discovered Lincoln had autism, I went through a bit of a depression. I was grieving for the child I once had... and the child I thought I'd have. After speaking with other parents, I have discovered it is, almost without exception, what every other autism parent goes through when their child is first diagnosed. I lost 10 pounds within just a few weeks because I stopped eating. But something curious happens when you lose weight because of depression: you regain it!

I was trying to "cure" my son through diet. So I put him on the strictest diet in the whole world. Tip: Unless you have Chron's disease and a nasty flare-up that you'd rather die from, I do not recommend doing this diet. The Gotschall diet is an elimination diet. It required me to make homemade applesauce, homemade mayonaise, grind up his organic chicken, cook his carrots for 3 hours, etc. I was torturing my son AND myself. I had no time to cook for myself, so I just grabbed whatever was around, which was usually junk food. I thought I wouldn't gain weight, since I was hardly eating anything. It turns out, however, that eating six fun-size candy bars for lunch from the work community candy bowl does NOT equal a healthy, calorie-portioned lunch.

The result? I gained about twenty pounds in six months! Through a series of miracles, I was able to get my son to a GI doc who specialized in children with autism. I have come to the realization that his chronic constipation is a result of his brain having a difficult time communicating with his gut. Where he does have some food intolerances, I choose to feed him a regular, healthy diet. I saw improvement in Lincoln immediately and also with my sanity. I was able to get back to eating a healthy, balanced diet and back to exercise.

HCG is a crock

I have also realized that HCG is a diet that causes one to lose massive amounts of muscle. I had my body fat percentage checked a few weeks after HCG. The result? About half of the weight I lost was muscle! That's a recipe for weight regain, folks. You lose it fast, but at a cost. I wish I had initially lost it the way I know how: Exercise and eating healthy.

Today

I am 10 pounds down from the 20 I gained, which leaves me right where I was when we first found out about the diagnosis. Am I frustrated? Heck no. I eat about 1500-1700 calories a day. I am taking it slow because I need to focus on my sweet, loving little boy. He requires a lot of work, but he is worth it!

Just 1.5 sizes away from my goal!

I'm not so awesome at updating my blog. Family and work life are very busy! At any rate, thought I'd document my progress here.

It's been over a month and a half since I ended the hCG maintenance phase. I have to say I kept all the weight off and have even since taken off another 8 pounds! I may do it again at the end of the summer if I'm unable to lose the last 15 pounds.

How have I kept losing weight? Well, for starters, I've been counting my calories and wearing the body bugg. Since I weight train, I try not to be more than at a 750/day caloric deficit. I've also been EXERCISING! A lot. Not like an obsessive-compulsive (like I was before), but around 45 minutes to an hour each day. I'm training for the Bear Lake Brawl Olympic Triathlon. This is around a 3 1/2 - 4 hour event for me. It's a 1 mile swim, 24.85 mile bike and then a 10k run. I'm really not great at any of these events, but I can do them. Here's what I've been doing:

Monday: 30-minute run. Bike to work & back if I'm feeling saucy.
Tuesday: 30-minute swim in the AM and weight training for an hour in the afternoon
Wednesday: 45-minute bike with 3-minute zone 3 HR intervals for about 15 minutes.
Thursday: 30-minute swim in the AM and weight train for an hour in the afternoon
Friday: 30-minute run.
Saturday: 1-hour race-pace bike ride (about 15-20 min in zone 3) and follow immediately with a 15-minute run (called BRICKS. Helps to train for the run transition)

I usually eat around 1,500-1,750 calories a day (more on the weight training days). I try to get in a 30% protein, 40% carbs and 30% fat ratio. I have felt the weight come off. I'm a tighter size 10 on my legs and a perfect size 8 around my waist. I am hoping this will be a bit more balanced in the coming months. I'd like to just be a size 8 all around. To get to my goal weight (the weight I was when I got married), I need to lose about 15 more pounds. It actually seems possible now!

I heart Moab

I went out of town last weekend to the most amazing place on Earth. Moab, Utah. It's full of God's most beautiful natural creation. The red rock was calling our names, so we had to go. We did plenty of mountain biking, a little road biking (because the little tyke was tired and hungry and didn't want to ride in his child bike stroller), and some hiking. I did ok with the eating, but not awesome. I watched my sugar intake. I had like 2 peanut butter cookies and 2 mini candy-bars. Other than that, I just ate what everyone else was eating.

I also started TOM on vaca, which was awesome. I got back from Moab yesterday and I was where I was when I left. My bodybugg did say I burned massive calories, however. On the biggest mtn biking day I burned close to 3,500 calories! I also had the awesome all-you-can-eat pizza/pasta bar later, however. I suspect TOM is affecting how much I weigh by about 3 pounds. That's usually the case.

Anyhow, I got the bug in me and today I had to bike to work. I know scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast, but I can't not do it now. I love it too much! But today we're back to the grindstone with the calories. I need another fill. I can eat anything under the sun!

Holy Crap!

It's been forever since I posted! Okay so here's the update: About a week after I started the HCG diet, I finally stopped starving and actually felt pretty good! I finished the diet out at 15 pounds lighter than when I started! Ah yeah. In addition, I had my body fat checked again (I had it checked when I first started), and nearly ALL of the weight I lost was body fat. That is WAYYYYY better than any diet I've ever done before. On most diets, you'll lose 25-30% in lean body mass.

At any rate, I liked it so much, I decided to start selling it. I have a friend who owns a pharmacy who manufactures the drops. He agreed to let me sell it. I really just wanted to start helping people lose weight. This way I can charge people less than what I paid for it and help tutor them along the way.

So now I'm on maintenance. I've lost another 3 pounds since stopping the diet and I'm back down to a size 12, comfortably, and a size 10 that is somewhat tight, but still looks good! I'd like to lose 25 more pounds, then I'll be back down to my lowest weight! I'm not sure I'll get there, though. I was a size 4 at my lowest and working out a ton.

I'm doing the Legacy Duathlon on April 17. We've been doing some biking and I plan on getting more running in as the weather continues to improve. It'll be fun and I can do it with my little boy. He loves his bike trailer. Wish me luck!

I am losing willpower! I had one M & M today, however, I resisted freshly baked cinnamon rolls, Famous Dave's BBQ lunch, brownies, chocolate cake and all sorts of other junk food available today at the retreat! So I'm giving myself a thumbs up!

Here's today's meals (I did go 60 calories over):

Baaah!

Apparently I'm not as awesome of a blogger as I thought I was. Well I'm back at it. I sort of have to be. I started a new weight-loss plan: HCG.

The HCG diet, in a nutshell, is where you eat 500 calories a day and take the HCG hormone. The idea behind it is that the HCG "frees up" the abnormal fat reserves, thus allowing your body to feed off of its fat reserves rather than food. You are apparently supposed to not be hungry, though I'm STARVING! Sounds a bit cannibalistic and hokie to me, but I'm going with it since I know that 500 calories a day will make you lose weight, HCG or not. I am on day 3. The first two days are "loading" days, where you eat as much fattening food as you can fit down your esophagus. Today is my first 500 calorie day. I hear the first week is rough, but after that the HCG has fully kicked in and you feel full.

So today here's my food plan. Note that I have already had my breakfast and lunch, so it's up to me to get the rest of the day right:
