Just 1.5 sizes away from my goal!

I'm not so awesome at updating my blog. Family and work life are very busy! At any rate, thought I'd document my progress here.

It's been over a month and a half since I ended the hCG maintenance phase. I have to say I kept all the weight off and have even since taken off another 8 pounds! I may do it again at the end of the summer if I'm unable to lose the last 15 pounds.

How have I kept losing weight? Well, for starters, I've been counting my calories and wearing the body bugg. Since I weight train, I try not to be more than at a 750/day caloric deficit. I've also been EXERCISING! A lot. Not like an obsessive-compulsive (like I was before), but around 45 minutes to an hour each day. I'm training for the Bear Lake Brawl Olympic Triathlon. This is around a 3 1/2 - 4 hour event for me. It's a 1 mile swim, 24.85 mile bike and then a 10k run. I'm really not great at any of these events, but I can do them. Here's what I've been doing:

Monday: 30-minute run. Bike to work & back if I'm feeling saucy.
Tuesday: 30-minute swim in the AM and weight training for an hour in the afternoon
Wednesday: 45-minute bike with 3-minute zone 3 HR intervals for about 15 minutes.
Thursday: 30-minute swim in the AM and weight train for an hour in the afternoon
Friday: 30-minute run.
Saturday: 1-hour race-pace bike ride (about 15-20 min in zone 3) and follow immediately with a 15-minute run (called BRICKS. Helps to train for the run transition)

I usually eat around 1,500-1,750 calories a day (more on the weight training days). I try to get in a 30% protein, 40% carbs and 30% fat ratio. I have felt the weight come off. I'm a tighter size 10 on my legs and a perfect size 8 around my waist. I am hoping this will be a bit more balanced in the coming months. I'd like to just be a size 8 all around. To get to my goal weight (the weight I was when I got married), I need to lose about 15 more pounds. It actually seems possible now!

I heart Moab

I went out of town last weekend to the most amazing place on Earth. Moab, Utah. It's full of God's most beautiful natural creation. The red rock was calling our names, so we had to go. We did plenty of mountain biking, a little road biking (because the little tyke was tired and hungry and didn't want to ride in his child bike stroller), and some hiking. I did ok with the eating, but not awesome. I watched my sugar intake. I had like 2 peanut butter cookies and 2 mini candy-bars. Other than that, I just ate what everyone else was eating.

I also started TOM on vaca, which was awesome. I got back from Moab yesterday and I was where I was when I left. My bodybugg did say I burned massive calories, however. On the biggest mtn biking day I burned close to 3,500 calories! I also had the awesome all-you-can-eat pizza/pasta bar later, however. I suspect TOM is affecting how much I weigh by about 3 pounds. That's usually the case.

Anyhow, I got the bug in me and today I had to bike to work. I know scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast, but I can't not do it now. I love it too much! But today we're back to the grindstone with the calories. I need another fill. I can eat anything under the sun!

Holy Crap!

It's been forever since I posted! Okay so here's the update: About a week after I started the HCG diet, I finally stopped starving and actually felt pretty good! I finished the diet out at 15 pounds lighter than when I started! Ah yeah. In addition, I had my body fat checked again (I had it checked when I first started), and nearly ALL of the weight I lost was body fat. That is WAYYYYY better than any diet I've ever done before. On most diets, you'll lose 25-30% in lean body mass.

At any rate, I liked it so much, I decided to start selling it. I have a friend who owns a pharmacy who manufactures the drops. He agreed to let me sell it. I really just wanted to start helping people lose weight. This way I can charge people less than what I paid for it and help tutor them along the way.

So now I'm on maintenance. I've lost another 3 pounds since stopping the diet and I'm back down to a size 12, comfortably, and a size 10 that is somewhat tight, but still looks good! I'd like to lose 25 more pounds, then I'll be back down to my lowest weight! I'm not sure I'll get there, though. I was a size 4 at my lowest and working out a ton.

I'm doing the Legacy Duathlon on April 17. We've been doing some biking and I plan on getting more running in as the weather continues to improve. It'll be fun and I can do it with my little boy. He loves his bike trailer. Wish me luck!

Baaah!

Apparently I'm not as awesome of a blogger as I thought I was. Well I'm back at it. I sort of have to be. I started a new weight-loss plan: HCG.

The HCG diet, in a nutshell, is where you eat 500 calories a day and take the HCG hormone. The idea behind it is that the HCG "frees up" the abnormal fat reserves, thus allowing your body to feed off of its fat reserves rather than food. You are apparently supposed to not be hungry, though I'm STARVING! Sounds a bit cannibalistic and hokie to me, but I'm going with it since I know that 500 calories a day will make you lose weight, HCG or not. I am on day 3. The first two days are "loading" days, where you eat as much fattening food as you can fit down your esophagus. Today is my first 500 calorie day. I hear the first week is rough, but after that the HCG has fully kicked in and you feel full.

So today here's my food plan. Note that I have already had my breakfast and lunch, so it's up to me to get the rest of the day right:

Breakfast:

Grapefruit, fresh, pink and red, California and Arizona, 0.5 fruit (3-3/4" dia) 46 12 0 1

Well that did it

So tonight my esophagus threw a royal fit. I went in for a .1cc fill today and my esophagus just couldn't handle it. Got to the point where I couldn't keep anything down, including my own spit. I felt like there was something squeezing my throat. It was so incredibly painful! So I called my girl, Colleen, the awesome nurse who helps me, and asked her if she could meet me and unfill me. She did and now I feel 100% better! I can't even explain how awesome that feels.

I don't think I have a slip because I felt immediately better once unfilled. Colleen said most people who have slips don't find that there is really any relief when unfilled. I'm going to go the weekend unfilled and on Monday put a bit back in again. I'm going to get filled back up SLOWLY! Meaning, at best, .2 cc's at a time. Maybe that'll do the trick. In the meantime I'll have to be pretty careful about my calorie intake!

Ten pounds gone!

Oh yeah. Uh Huh. Ten pounds are gone! That's ten full pounds in one month. How have I done it? Mostly by following the no-sugar rule and exercising almost daily. It also helps that my esophagus is doing the super lame first-bite syndrome so it spasms every time I try to eat something. Makes me just not want to eat. Mostly happens at dinner time, so I eat about three bites of dinner and then just give up. I've tried the warm liquids, but it doesn't seem to help.

At any rate, this is good news! My husband says he can "feel" that I'm skinnier. That makes me happy :) The only thing right now that's not making me happy is this freakin fickle band! Ugh!

Okay, so my daily calorie burn rate continues to be about 2,300. That's not bad! Especially for the winter. We're going to buy a bike trailer for my son so we can go riding with him in the summer. I'm excited for it!

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Today I went to the doc. I am down five pounds in the last three weeks or so! This is good news! The bad news about today was that I had two handfuls of fiddle faddle and a little chips ahoy cookie. It was super lame of me. I just hadn't had any breakfast or lunch and there was SO much junk food at the meeting.

At any rate, I haven't missed an exercise day since I started, despite not feeling well. Okay, my baby's crying and needs is mom. Gotta run!

January 19, 2010 - Still on track

So I weighed myself last Friday. 3 pounds down last week! I think it's finally starting to come off again. What's been the secret? It's the same way I lost it the firt time: I gave up sugar and exercised daily. So far, so good. Nick and I have agreed to have only one treat a week, and we've stuck to it. I ate a piece of birthday cake on Saturday at my niece's one-year-old birthday party. It wasn't as awesome as I remember sugar being.

Scale victories this past week: 3 pound loss
Non-scale victories: Turned down banana splits, chocolate chip cookies, a rootbear float, and wedding shower goodies!

Nick has proposed that we train for an upcoming triathlon this June. He wants to do an Olympic tri. I've done Olympic and it's pretty hard, but not impossible. For me, I think a Sprint is a little more doable right now. When I was originally training for an Olympic, I was exercising 1-2 hours a day and 3 on Saturdays. Now that I have a baby that's going to be nearly impossible, so for now I'm sticking with a half-hour daily. I think I can hack a sprint tri on a half-hour exercise every day. I just take my little babe to the empty gym at my work and he lays in his carseat quietly while I exercise. It's great!

I'm in the business of creating websites for a living and, in the past, I've bartered quite a bit for web services. I've bartered for a reception center, a wedding dress, a wedding cake and cupcakes for showers, hair salon services, beauty spa services, male dress clothing, custom tailoring, and even liposuction. I think my next bartering endeavor is going to be for personal training! Oh yes. That's how I'm going to afford it.

I'll have to report after I've gotten on the scale for this afternoon's workout.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Today's pretty much the worst day of this week to chart my food and exercise. Why? I've been sick all day, home, not eating much, but what I have been eating hasn't been exactly healthy food.

Food:
Breakfast: none
Lunch: none
Snack: Four graham crackers and 2 cups of 1% milk
Snack: About 10 Dorito chips
Dinner: Slice of pizza my parents brought me

Exercise:
None

How bout I recap yesterday:

Food
Breakfast: 3 cheese crackers with peanut butter
Snack: 2 squares graham crackers
Lunch: Lean Cuisine spaghetti with meat sauce
Snack: 2 graham crackers with peanut butter and 1 cup milk
Dinner: 4 oz cranberry chicken with 1/2 cup sweet potatoes

Total calories consumed: 1,392 calories

Exercise
1/2 hour on Elliptical Trainer

Total calories burned: 2,350

Total calorie deficit: 958

So my plan for tomorrow is to exercise 40 minutes: 10 jogging, 15 elliptical and 15 on the arc trainer. I plan to also walk for 15 minutes in the morning with my awesome husband.

Tomorrow's breakfast will consist of a protein shake, lunch will be a Lean Cuisine, snack will be a yogurt and some cheese/peanut butter crackers, dinner will be a homemade salisbury steak. I'd like to eat a graham cracker or possibly some peaches and cottage cheese for my "sugar-free" dessert.

My first post

At the beginning of my weight loss journey I decided to start a blog to track my progress. It was a huge part of my success. Since the blog turned into more of a journal than a progress blog, I decided to start a new one!

Here I will set goals and report on them. I'll track my food and progress, then observe and make changes! Let the fun begin.

I have a reason for my newfound motivation: my son. Yes, I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy eleven weeks ago and he, and my husband, are the lights of life. And though he was totally worth it, my little bundle of joy cost me about 35 pounds. I was totally unfilled for the pregnancy and gained about 50 pounds total. My breastmilk never really came in, so it's up to me and my good friends food and exercise to lose the rest.

I'm not exactly sure why I feel SOOOO much heavier this time around than I did when I was this weight before. I'm a size 13 and feel pretty huge. It's silly, isn't it? Before I met my husband I was a size 6, a few months after I got married I was about 155 pounds and a size 8, which I had pretty much settled in and was happy with.

As of a few days ago, I was 191 pounds! I felt so hopeless standing on that scale because I'd been exercising since a few weeks after having the baby and had seen only a one-pound loss. After crying in the car to my sweet husband, he came up with a plan: We both give up sugar. If we can make it to the end of February, we're going on a cruise! I'm going on about a week now and feeling great. I've been wearing the bodybugg again, and trying to net a 750 calorie deficit for a 1.5 pound loss every week.

The only leeway I get each week is a treat on Sunday nights. Grandpa Ferguson's cookie night. Who can say no to that?

So, I think this is enough of an intro to this blog. Wish me luck!
